ZzTop: Afterburner lp
ZZ Top – Afterburner (LP)
Originally released in 1985, Afterburner takes ZZ Top’s Texas boogie into the neon-lit world of synthesizers, tightly programmed rhythms and glossy arena rock. Their ninth studio album pushes further into the electronic sound explored on Eliminator, while Billy Gibbons’ gritty guitar and unmistakable vocals keep the band’s blues-rooted character in focus.
Sleeping Bag sets the pace with a muscular groove and an instantly memorable hook, while Stages delivers brisk, melodic rock. Rough Boy slows things down, pairing atmospheric keyboards with lyrical guitar lines, and Velcro Fly adds a playful rhythmic twist. The contrast between rough-edged guitar and sleek production gives the album its distinctive personality.
Afterburner was a major commercial success, reaching No. 4 on the US album chart and earning a five-times-platinum RIAA certification by 1999. Sleeping Bag also reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.
A strong choice for listeners who enjoy the crossroads of blues rock and 1980s studio pop: big hooks, crisp grooves and guitar playing with plenty of bite.
